In the framework of the documentary “Antibiotics for animals” broadcasted on Top Channel on December 15, 2021 a round table was held. This investigative documentary was produced within the project financed by the European Union “Empowering journalism in the function of accountability and democracy” (EJAD), implemented by Top Channel in partnership with the Friedrich Ebert Stiftung (FES).
The event was attended by representatives from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, professors of veterinary medicine and food safety, chemists, experts, activists and journalists.
Independent experts assessed the alarming situation in the pharmacy market of veterinary where, as the investigation revealed, medicines with strictly prohibited carcinogenic content were being sold.
The sale of medical products without prescriptions and their use without having a veterinarian consultation was one of the main points that was raised with concern for the great risk that it carries in the population from dangerous waste of antibiotics. The representative of the Ministry of Agriculture emphasized that the competente bodies took the necessary steps and after the broadcast of the documentary, a series of inspections were launched. Also, after the documentary, the situation was reassessed for legal improvements related to the import, control, analysis and distribution of veterinary medicines.
